Striking Japanese hand-carved melon-form lacquer box, finished in glossy black lacquer and delicately decorated with mother of pearl floral and vine inlay. The sculptural oval form is carved to resemble a ripened melon or gourd, opening at the center to reveal a fitted interior ideal for jewelry, keepsakes, or small treasures.
Japanese lacquerware (urushi) has a centuries-old tradition rooted in meticulous craftsmanship and layered lacquer techniques. Decorative pieces featuring mother of pearl inlay (raden) became especially popular for export during the late 19th and 20th centuries, admired for their luminous contrast and refined artistry. The organic melon shape reflects traditional symbolism of abundance, prosperity, and longevity, themes frequently seen in Japanese decorative arts.
The shimmering inlay catches the light beautifully against the deep black lacquer ground, while the carved form adds sculptural dimension. This piece works effortlessly as a tabletop accent, bookshelf object, or functional decorative box in interiors ranging from Chinoiserie and Hollywood Regency to eclectic and modern spaces.
