This distinctive mid-century mantel clock is a refined yet characterful example of early 1960s European design. Produced in 1962 and fitted with an original mechanical movement by Hermle, it combines precision German engineering with a sculptural, design-forward form.
The clock immediately reads as an eye-catching decorative object. Its unusual elongated base, softly rounded geometry, and asymmetrical composition give it a strong visual presence, making it far more than a conventional timepiece. As a decorative clock, it functions as a unique and creative interior accent, adding warmth, rhythm, and a sense of mid-century optimism to any space.
The warm wooden case, protected by a gently curved glass front and accented with subtle brass details, reflects the transition period of the early 1960s—where traditional craftsmanship met modernist experimentation. The dial design is clean and balanced, allowing the natural materials and proportions to take center stage.
Stamped 343/8 and dated 11 April 1962, the clock clearly documents its production period. Inside, the original mechanical movement bears the Hermle signature, confirming both authenticity and quality. An additional interior plaque from Slotboom’s Horlogerie offers a rare glimpse into the clock’s original retail and service history, adding an extra layer of provenance that collectors appreciate.
Whether placed on a sideboard, shelf, or mantel, this clock works beautifully as both a functional object and a sculptural design piece. It suits interiors ranging from mid-century modern and Scandinavian to eclectic or contemporary spaces looking for a warm, authentic statement object.
