A handsome provincial example featuring a beautifully … Read more Early to mid-19th century Scottish longcase (grandfather) clock signed J. Ritchie, Cupar, Fife. A handsome provincial example featuring a beautifully painted arched dial with maritime allegorical scene depicting a seated classical figure with anchor and sailing vessels at sea.

The dial retains its original painted decoration with floral spandrels, Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, and date aperture. Pierced brass hands remain intact. The hood is framed by fluted columns and capped with a traditional Scottish scroll pediment accented by brass rosettes.

The oak case displays attractive quarter-sawn figuring and inlaid line detailing on the trunk door. Its proportions (78” height) make it slightly more compact and easier to place than many taller Scottish examples, while still offering strong architectural presence.

Signed regional Scottish clocks from Fife are increasingly appreciated for their craftsmanship and decorative dial painting.
