It is a high quality … Read more The object is a beautiful classic Japanese Imari charger from early to Mid 20th century. It is a high quality later Imari revival piece made for export. THe outstanding feature is the scalloped rim with heavy decorative presence. The palette is classic Imari - cobalt blue underglaze with iron-red and lots of gilt. The border design is of stylized cherry blossoms (sakura) with gold scrollwork. The central scene in blue and white is a nice composition of a sailing boat caring cargo that looks like red coral. There are two cranes flying overhead and over a landscape with a large pine tree to the right. Both are symbols of longevity. So is the hairy turtle painted on the bottom. altogether the art motifs symbolize a very Japanese theme of prosperity and long life. The charger is highly decorative and the scalloped edges enhance its beauty. The bottom shows a short foot rim, and has the traditional underglaze blue and white floral designs. The crackling under the glaze show good age. There is an impressed two character mark of the potter. See less
