Santa Clara pottery is known for its distinctive glossy black finishes. Vickie gathers the clay herself, hand coils the pots, carves the designs, fires the clay, then uses a polishing stone to create the shiny, gunmetal black finish. To hold a Martinez pot is to hold a work of art.
This small pot has approximate dimensions of approximately 2 1/4" Height and Diameter of approximately 3 1/2 ". It is hand-signed and marked "99". Year would be 1999. In great shape, normal wear, no chips or cracks.
Vickie Martinez is an accomplished Santa Clara Pueblo potter who makes elegant and stylish carved black pots. Vickie was influenced in her pottery development by her mother Barbara Martinez, her grandmother, Flora Naranjo, and by the great potters, Stella Chavarria and Teresita Naranjo.
