A rare and exceptional pair of very old handmade picture frames retaining their original manufacturer’s patent label, original arched mats, glass, and backing. These frames are not reproductions or later assemblies—every component is original to the period.
The paper label on the reverse reads:
“No. 130 G. Gold Ornamented Bevel. Illuminated Front. Pat’d Sept. 1st, 1874.”
with the original B & B trade mark, firmly dating these frames to the late 19th century and confirming their early patented illuminated mat construction.
Each frame features hand-carved wood construction, a rich dark finish, aged gilt inner molding, and a decorative arched mat with original printed and etched embellishment. The illuminated front design was an advanced framing technique of the era, intended to visually brighten photographs and artwork through layered matting and glass.
Measurements (each frame):
• Overall frame size: 14.25 inches tall x 12.25 inches wide
• Visible mat opening: 7.5 inches wide x 9.75 inches tall
• Interior photo opening: 5.5 inches wide x approximately 7.5 inches tall at the arched peak
Details:
• Original 1874 patent label present
• Handmade carved wood frames
• Gold ornamented beveled inner molding
• Original decorative arched mats with design work
• Original glass and backing
• Sold as a matching pair
Condition:
These frames are offered completely unrestored and in original condition. There are scuffs and wear to the edges, loss and staining to the gilt, age-related crackling, and surface patina consistent with their age. One frame has approximately a 2-inch section missing from the lower portion of the back cover. The original paper label shows age toning and staining, as expected. No attempts have been made to clean, repair, or alter any surfaces.
Date: patented September 1, 1874
A true collector’s set—ideal for antique photography, period interiors, shadowbox displays, or collectors of early American framing and decorative arts.
