An elegant french mantel clock from the napoleon iii era, made by viot & cie, circa 1860–1880.
the composition features a finely modeled sculptural peacock supporting the clock case on its back, cast in patinated and fire-gilded bronze. The plumage is worked with great detail, alternating dark and gold tones that add depth and enhance the naturalistic character of the piece, typical of 19th-century parisian decorative bronzes.
the glazed porcelain dial displays polychrome decoration in turquoise, yellow, and red tones with floral motifs and arabic numerals, providing an attractive chromatic contrast. A visible seam is present, as the porcelain is divided into two sections—a stable condition consistent with its age that does not affect legibility or the strong decorative presence of the piece.
the clock rests on an architectural base with oriental inspiration and bamboo-like details, reflecting the taste for chinoiserie and japonisme so characteristic of the napoleon iii period.
