Here is a rare example of a large statuary Parian portrait bust of famed 19th century American politician and anti-slavery … Read more Here is a rare example of a large statuary Parian portrait bust of famed 19th century American politician and anti-slavery hero, Charles Sumner (1811-1874) measuring more than 19” tall , with manufacturers cipher “J. Mc Dermot & S Copyright” incised at rear shoulder, very likely commissioned from a Stoke-on-Trent potter such as Robinson & Leadbeater or others , in very fine condition, with slight dust accretions consistent with age and one small nick to corner of jacket collar . Seldom found in this size, this measures about 19” tall, raised on large original waisted socle with original brass bolt fastener.. The reverse is also inscribed with Sumners passionate plea , “ Equality of rights is the first of rights!” which provoked the near deadly attack from Preston Brooks , who beat Sumner nearly to death on the Senate floor in 1856. Complete your Civil War collection with this large and extremely fine addition, rarely found in this large size. This bust is featured in The Parian Phenomenon. In wonderful condition. See less
