Bohemian cut-to-clear crystal's history began in Bohemia (Czech Republic) with Renaissance innovations, using potash-chalk glass perfect for wheel-engraving, perfected by Caspar Lehmann in the 17th century for Emperor Rudolf II, creating richly decorated glass that rivaled Venetian wares. The vibrant, colored cut-to-clear styles, often featuring deep cuts revealing clear crystal beneath, gained popularity later, becoming iconic for their brilliance and intricate designs through the Baroque, Art Nouveau, and mid-century periods, continuing a tradition of high-quality, handcrafted decorative glass.
