A rare and evocative early English pearlware novelty in the form of a delicate egg, dating to circa 1800–1830. This hollow-molded piece features exquisite black underglaze transfer-printed scenes laden with poignant symbolism from the Georgian and Regency eras.
One side portrays a grieving woman seated in contemplation beside an open birdcage, from which a bird takes flight—symbolizing the soul's liberation from earthly bonds or consolation in loss. The reverse displays a classical urn overflowing with a bountiful floral bouquet, accompanied by a dove, evoking themes of remembrance, mortality, and eternal peace. These motifs draw from neoclassical mourning traditions, akin to representations of Andromache lamenting Hector, adapted here into intimate, sentimental form.
The softly glazed pearlware body displays a faint bluish hue, crisp transfer detail, and a barely visible vertical mold seam typical of these objects. A small factory-made perforation at the base confirms its hollow construction—likely intended as a lightweight, personal keepsake, gentle sewing aid, or ornamental token. Its petite scale, about the size of a hen’s egg, enhances its charm as an emotionally resonant object. It reflects an era fascinated with neoclassicism, classical tragedy, and memorial objects following the Napoleonic Wars and high mortality rates.
A rare survivor in very good condition, showing only minor imperfections typical of early pearlware as shown. Ideal for collectors of transferware, pearlware novelties, or Regency-era mourning pottery. Shipped fully insured with tracking.
Measurements: 2 3/8 inches (6 cm) tall by 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cm) at widest point.
