A striking pair of monumental carved oak ceremonial armchairs, executed in the Charles II / Restoration style and dating to the late 19th–early 20th century. These sculptural chairs draw their inspiration from 17th-century English court and castle seating, a tradition strongly associated with historic royal interiors such as those at Windsor Castle, though they are best understood as revival pieces rather than literal replicas.
Crafted from solid oak, each chair features exceptionally deep hand-carved decoration throughout, including boldly scrolled arms, barley-twist legs and stretchers, and pierced cane backs framed by heavy relief carving. The crest rails are richly ornamented with royal crown motifs flanked by cherubic figures, a hallmark Restoration symbol referencing sovereignty, lineage, and ceremony. The scale and consistency of the carving reflect skilled workshop craftsmanship typical of high-quality revival furniture from this period.
The chairs retain a beautifully aged, dark oak patina, with surface variation and wear consistent with age. Loose velvet seat cushions with tie-ons are later additions, providing comfort while remaining visually appropriate and easily removable.
Designed for grand interiors, these chairs were intended to serve as focal pieces in libraries, halls, or statement rooms and translate effortlessly into today’s traditional, historic, or eclectic spaces. Their commanding presence and architectural quality make them equally compelling as decorative objects or functional seating.
A rare and powerful pair that balances historic gravitas, decorative drama, and enduring craftsmanship.
