Val's Dollhouse is proud to present this colorfully adorned matte bisque porcelain figure by the late 19th century renowned Parisian manufacturer, Vion and Baury.
Masters of the Rococo Revival style, Vion and Baury have won numerous awards at Worlds Fairs. This rare and stately piece depicts an utterly feminine maternal figure in flowing gowns, evidently elegantly leaning in to hear an angel's whispers. In typical fashion of the era, she is supported by a vine wrapped marble pedestal upon which the cherub rests.
The statue itself sits on a vibrant raspberry pink plinth with central floral plaque. A content owl is perched upon the base of the angel's pillar. The owl in French art history acts as a "silent contemplator," often representing wisdom, secrecy, mystery, intuition and natural beauty.
Hand painted and glazed with generous amounts of gold gilt., including a depiction of medusa's face emblazoned across the pillar. Medusa is often symbolic as a gargoyle type sentinel of protection.
It is excellently preserved condition with only very minor craze lines upon close inspection due to the firing process.
The underside bears the green anchor mark of Vion & Baury.
She stands approximately 13" tall, certain to add an element of sophistication to traditional home styles. For the contemporary home, expect a pleasantly surprising touch of art history and one-of-a-kind intrigue!
This piece dates to the late 1800's.
More about the manufacturer:
Vion & Baury was a prominent 19th-century French porcelain manufacturer, founded in Paris by Theodore Desire Vion and Charles Martial Baury, specializing in high-quality bisque and, less often, polychrome figures. Active from 1868 (taking over the Jean Gille studio) until 1889, they gained fame for detailed, Rococo-style sculptures.
