Antique Chinese lacquered document or scroll box dating to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1880–1900. Measuring 51" long, this chest is decorated with sinuous 5-clawed dragons amid scrolling cloud motifs, rendered in warm golden pigment against a black lacquer ground. The box opens to a divided interior with three compartments of varying widths. Such boxes were traditionally used to store calligraphy scrolls, rolled documents, or official papers within a scholar’s studio or household archive.
Its substantial length gives the piece strong architectural presence, making it well suited for decorative storage and display.
JUNE'S THOUGHTS
When I first saw this displayed on a credenza across the room, my immediate reaction was, "WOW—Look at that! " The long, low silhouette reads almost like a sculptural object rather than a storage piece, and the dragons reveal themselves slowly as you approach. I love this used where you’d normally expect a lamp or sculpture—on a credenza, console, or sideboard—adding an unexpected layer of history and graphic impact to a space without taking up visual height.
