A magnificent napoleon iii period mantel clock, dating to around 1865–1875, crafted in deep bleu de sèvres porcelain and richly decorated with finely chased gilt bronze (ormolu). This is an exceptional and large example of the french second empire style, bringing together luxurious materials, exquisite sculptural detail and the precision of a prestigious parisian movement.
design & materials
the clock is composed of a monumental vase-form body in intense royal sèvres blue, framed with lavish gilt bronze ornamentation. The front is adorned with garlands, acanthus and floral motifs; the sides feature classical lion’s mascarons and suspended tassels; the base is animated by two beautifully modelled winged cherubs playing musical instruments.
crowning the piece is a sculptural group of two doves resting on a bouquet of roses, symbolising harmony and affection – a common motif in luxurious wedding gifts of the period.
the quality of the ormolu is outstanding: crisp chasing, heavy casting and a rich original gilded surface that has survived remarkably well.
movement
the clock houses an original japy frères paris movement, stamped with the maker’s medallion “japy frères & cie – medaille d’honneur” – one of the highest distinctions awarded on the exposition universelle.
japy movements were used exclusively in high-end parisian clocks and are prized for their reliability and craftsmanship.
the clock runs well; however:
the strike mechanism (hour bell) is detached and requires simple re-soldering,
the enamel cartouche for the roman numeral i is missing.
both issues are minor, easy to restore, and do not affect the beauty or collectability of the piece.
dimensions
height: 54 cm (21.2 in)

gilding: beautifully preserved with warm original patina.
mechanism complete with pendulum and bell.
no structural losses to the bronze.
one enamel cartouche missing (i).
