This exceptional decorative bowl was designed and manufactured in Taxco, Mexico during the 1960s by the renowned workshop Los Castillo, a cornerstone of the Mexican modernist silver movement. Crafted in solid brass with a silver-plated finish, the bowl features an elegant pedestal form accented with rich stone inlays of malachite and lapis lazuli, arranged in a bold circular motif that reflects mid-century design sensibilities and pre-Columbian geometric influences.
The interior retains a smooth silvered surface, while the exterior pedestal is wrapped in meticulously cut stone panels, showcasing the artisanal skill and material experimentation that defined Los Castillo’s most celebrated works. The piece is clearly hallmarked on the underside “Los Castillo, Taxco, Plateado,” confirming its authenticity and origin.
Founded by Antonio Castillo and later expanded with his brothers, Los Castillo played a pivotal role in elevating Taxco silver from traditional craftsmanship to internationally recognized design. Their workshop became known for innovative techniques, mixed-metal construction, and the integration of natural stones—helping shape Mexico’s postwar silversmithing identity and influencing generations of artisans.
A striking and collectible example of Mexican modern decorative arts, ideal as a centerpiece, console accent, or addition to a curated silver or mid-century design collection.
