The box features a deep black lacquer ground adorned with intricate hand-applied gilt arabesque scrollwork and a central figural cartouche depicting a stag in a pastoral landscape — a traditional motif of Kashmiri decorative arts. The fine linework and layered gilding reflect the high level of craftsmanship associated with export lacquerware of the period.

Constructed of lacquered papier-mâché or wood with original brass hinges and a fully lacquered interior, this piece embodies the rich cross-cultural design aesthetic that made Anglo-Indian furnishings so desirable in Victorian England.

A small hand-applied gilt flourish remains inside the lid, a traditional workshop decorative stroke seen on authentic Kashmiri lacquerware of the period.
