This is a set of 4 J CLemenstone Ironstone Plates in the "Sydenham" Pattern produced in Staffordshire, England during the … Read more This is a set of 4 J CLemenstone Ironstone Plates in the "Sydenham" Pattern produced in Staffordshire, England during the mid -19th century. The manufacturer owned his Phoenix Works pottery business from approx. 1840 to 1860.
Each plate features a neoclassical or romanticized architectural scene in the center with a Greek Statue, Columns and garden landscape in the background. They have an ornate border with scrolls and geometric accents.

The four plates are in excellent condition. Each shows the appropriate manufacture's mark and is stamped "12". Each plate bears the indentation spots for the brackets to hold the plate up during firing. The set has slight crazing, but each plate (except for a small flea chip on one) are in unusually good condition. Shows beautifully and is a fine example of early transferware.
These pieces show the detail of the manufacturing process at the time........ prior to the plate's firing, the ink-stained paper with the pattern was placed by the maker on the dish, then fired; thus, some plates show end cuts, smudges and pattern irregularity, indicative of the handmade nature within which this transferware was made.
