An extraordinary find. This faience, earthenware bowl is hand scratched sgraffito by its artist, the inimitable Raiija Uosikkinen (1923-2004) for Arabia Finland, made during the height of the Ceramic House's Mid Century Modern brilliance between 1953-1956. The pattern is Siena and very few exemplars from this Series survive.
The bowl has a mouth opening of 9.75" and a height of 3". It is marked on its underside with the Finland Arabia mark known colloquially as the "crown stamp", used from 1949-1964. It is the height of clash between utilitarianism and grand craftsmanship. The etched sgriffito in the green revealing the beige ground underneath is hand crafted by the Artist. The pattern of Siena is nativist veinny leaves with an "x" in the center. The exterior of the bowl is a beige color which found great popularity in Nordic design in the 1950s. This bowl has the classic colors and theme of the Siena pattern.
The bowl is in excellent condition.
