Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.
Tonalá is a city and municipality within the Guadalajara metropolitan area in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. Tonalá has a rich 3,000 year long history of being one of Mexico’s prolific producers of pottery due to the type of clay/soil found in the region. While eleven different types of pottery styles are practiced in Tonalá, the most well-known and popular is known as bruñido, meaning burnished, referring to the color of the clay. The stylish rectangular profile of this nicely weighted Tonalá whatnot box was handcrafted from bruñido clay, hand painted with colorful complementary earth tone accents of a birds, flowers and other whimsical foliates. It weighs 2 lbs. 1 oz. and measures as follows:
Overall: 6¾”x 4” x 3¾” W/D/H
Interior: 6” x 3¼” x 2” W/D/H
In excellent overall condition. As with all handcrafted pottery, minor variances are inherent and original to the maker and kiln process, which adds to the charm and uniqueness of the piece. So please take note that though the lid seats well on top of the base there is a slight wiggle and gap in one corner which does not affect its utility or beauty (see photos closely). Note also, the underside of the lid’s inner rim is partially crushed, which does not affect the security of the lid and has nothing to do with the aforementioned wiggle and gap. This caveat has to do entirely with human error in handling, meaning it was me who improperly handled the lid and crushed that part of the rim. Again, the box’s beauty, utility or integrity are unaffected. Makers signature on the underside.
With its colorfully charming rustic style, it is certain to complement most any design or color sensibility in your home! For a collector of earthenware whatnot boxes, this beauty will be a great add to that collection of the perfect gift for someone who is.
