Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.
Note: Lucite plate stand is not included.
A soup tureen straddles the line between home decor and dinnerware, a piece that is both decorative and functional. Beyond their functionality, tureens are true collectibles. You’ll feel like one heck of a host serving soup from this marvelous tureen with matching ladle and underplate. The stylishly clever design is not only gorgeous but substantial, 9-cup capacity, to hold your favorite cool weather soup like New England-style clam chowder or a rich broccoli cheddar in the fall and winter or a bright refreshing summer soup like Gazpacho with fresh summer tomatoes in the spring and summer. Together the four-piece set weighs 6 lbs. 7 oz. and measures as follows:
Tureen with lid: 14½” x 8” x 8” W/D/H; 9-cup capacity
Underplate: 13¾” x 11¼” x 1” W/D/H
Ladle: 7” long x 2¾” x 2¾” W/D; 2 oz. capacity
Artfully handcrafted from earthenware with a design that is beautifully textured on the exterior to mimic the crevices found on a natural conch shell. Color is a pearlescent almond hue with sandy undertones and a highly glazed, majolica-style finish. Lovely scallop shell details on the ladle’s handle tip and the perimeter of the underplate finish the look. On the interior you will find a shell pink highly glazed finish, as well as on the underside of the lid. In excellent condition with minimal, if any, wear. As with anything handcrafted and hand painted, pottery marks and color variances are inherent and add to the charm and uniqueness of this beauty. Pin marks on the undersides and inside are from the glazing firing process and are normal and result when a piece of pottery is released from inside the kiln. Normal too, are random underglaze pops. Makers signature on the underside of the tureen and underplate. We believe this beauty was handcrafted in Italy in 1982. Note, lucite plate stand is not included.
For a collector of decorative and utilitarian tureens, this beauty will complement most any design sensibility. It is the sort of once-in-a-lifetime piece that, should you pass it up, you never really stop thinking about. Bon appétit!
