This Really is a Great Looking Authentic Antique American Stoneware Butter Churn. Circa Approx 1860s - 1870s. These Small Size Stoneware Butter Churns are Scarce - You Typically Find Them in the 2 to 4 Gallon Size. NOTE That the Style of the Recessed Top Rim Inner Confirms that it is a Butter Churn. This Would Hold the Wood Splash Lid in Place While Churning - Using the Plunger. It has a Sandy Greige and Other in the Making Color Variation Salt Glaze Exterior. The Front is Artistically Hand Decorated with a Cobalt - Navy Blue Color Classic American Style Stylized Flower & Sprig Design. It has No Maker Mark but Based on the Style - Pattern of the Blue Decorated Design it was Most Likely Made by E. & P .L NORTON in Bennington Vermont or FRANK B. NORTON in Worcester Massachusetts. The Interior is Done in a Dark Coffee Brown Color. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use. These Types of American Stoneware Items we Completely Hand Made out of Indigenous Clay on a Potters Wheel from Start to Finish and Therefore No 2 are Absolutely Identical. It is in Excellent Original Condition and it Displays Beautifully. It has Small Chips in the Brown Glaze on the Recessed Top Inner Rim Perimeter These Occurring with Use Over the Years. It has a Few Minor Surface Glaze Etc. Imperfections but These are Kiln Flaws that Would have Occurred in the Making - Firing Process. Stoneware Pieces Like This were Fired in Very Large Kilns with Many Other Pieces at the Same Time and Many Types of Kiln Flaws are Quite Common in American Stoneware. No Cracks- No Repairs.
