This Really is a Great Looking Authentic Antique American Stoneware Butter Churn. Circa Approx 1860s - 1870s. NOTE That the Style of he Recessed Top Rim Inner Confirms that it is a Butter Churn. This Would Hold the Wood Splash Lid in Place While Churning - Using the Plunger. The Front Bears the Impressed Documented Maker Mark of EDMONDS & COMPANY in CHARLESTOWN MASSACHUSETTS. It has a Sandy Greige Color Salt Glaze Exterior and the Front is Artistically Hand Decorated with a Navy Blue Color Classic American Style Stylized Flower & Sprig Design. It is Also Embossed with a Number 2 Designating its Two Gallon Storage Capacity. It Also has the Added Feature of Applied Handles - "Ears". The Interior is Done in a Dark Coffee Brown Color. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use. These Types of American Stoneware Items we Completely Hand Made out of Indigenous Clay on a Potters Wheel from Start to Finish and Therefore No 2 are Absolutely Identical. It is in Excellent Original Condition and it Displays Beautifully. It has a Couple Surface Glaze Spot Imperfections at The Lower Base Perimeter Area as well as 2 Small "Iron Ping" Surface Chips but These are Kiln Flaws that Would have Occurred in the Making - Firing Process. It has NO CRACKS - NO REPAIRS. Note that There is a Surface Under the Glaze Scratch on the Bottom - Underside that is Also a Kiln Flaw ( Absolutely Not a Crack ) - This Can Be Seen in the Last - 18th Photograph in my Listiong. Stoneware Pieces Like This were Fired in Very Large Kilns with Many Other Pieces at the Same Time and Many Types of Kiln Flaws are Quite Common in American Stoneware.
