A rare antique French papier-mâché utility bowl dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
Hand-formed with thick molded papier-mâché and finished in a warm reddish-ochre ground with pale painted bands, this substantial basin features original riveted iron side handles and a stamped mark to the base.
Papier-mâché vessels of this scale were historically used for household utility—laundry, kitchen prep, or storage—valued for their lightweight yet durable construction before enamelware became widespread.
The surface shows authentic wear, interior darkening, and paint loss consistent with age and use, adding rich patina and character. Today, it works beautifully as a sculptural accent, decorative storage vessel, or rustic statement piece in a kitchen, entry, or shelf display. Makers Mark on bottom.
