This technique is called Sommerso, practised in Murano, near Venice, Italy. It is attributed to Alessandro of the Mandruzzato glass works. Alessandro Mandruzzato is known to encased colored glass in clear glass creating submerged color effects. Some of these vases like this one have textured or "sandblasted" surface which add visual and tactile interest.

Although there is no proof whether is is indeed a Alessandro Mandruzzato design, the vase came from a collector of glass pieces and the collection was large. See less
