Striking Edo-period Japanese color woodblock print depicting a seated warrior in layered robes with stylized quiver or bow elements behind him. The composition is paired with bold calligraphy from the celebrated kyōka (comic poem) series Azuma Kyōku Kyōka Gojūnin Isshu (“Eastern Tune Kyōka by Fifty Poets”), published in 1786 and associated with artist Kitao Masanobu (1761–1816). The print is presented in a simple modern frame with mat and glazing, making it ready to hang and display immediately. A wonderful piece for collectors of ukiyo-e, Edo-period works on paper, or Japanese poetry and literary themes.

COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Kyōka (“mad verse”) was a witty, often satirical style of poetry popular in late Edo Japan, part literary culture, part social humor. Prints from this series combine expressive figures with handwritten poems, giving them a uniquely intimate, manuscript-like feel.
On this example, the calligraphy is headed “Kadō (The Way of Flowers)”, attributed to Nobunaga, and can be read in smooth English as:
My small pleasure—
beloved white face powder,
and the autumn moon.
Husband and wife in harmony—
and let it happen three times over!
It’s light, teasing, and domestic—exactly the kind of humor that makes Edo-period kyōka prints so appealing to collectors today.
