This exceptional late 17th century Flemish side chair is finely carved with an architectural presence that reflects the Baroque taste of the period and is traditionally attributed to the circle of Daniel Marot. The tall, pierced back is richly worked with scrolling foliage, floral medallions, and bold symmetrical ornament, framed by turned and carved uprights that give the chair a commanding vertical emphasis. The depth and precision of the carving speak to a high level of craftsmanship intended for elite interiors.
The chair stands on robust turned legs joined by a shaped stretcher base, grounding the elaborate back with a sense of solidity and balance. Pieces of this type were often made for formal reception rooms, where they functioned as much as statements of status and refinement as they did seating. The dramatic silhouette and intricate carving make this chair equally compelling as a functional object or as a sculptural accent displayed on its own.
In nice antique condition with wear consistent with age and centuries of use. The splat shows an older repair that has been reinforced from the back with a spline, a common and honest period stabilization that does not detract from the chair’s visual impact. The seat upholstery is later and ready for reupholstery if desired. A rare and important example of late 17th century Flemish furniture, well suited to collectors of early European decorative arts. 51h x 21w x 18d seat height 19
