A late Qing dynasty Chinese blue and white porcelain headrest, often called a pillow, was made in a small scholar-scale format. Compact examples like this were used on kang platforms or daybeds as a headrest or arm support while reclining, reading, or writing.
Decorated in underglaze blue with a lively foo dog (guardian lion) playing with a brocade ball, the pillow combines symbolic imagery with a practical pierced form that allowed heat to dissipate. Today, pieces of this scale are equally appreciated as sculptural decorative objects, where the animated animal motif and blue-and-white palette add character to shelves, consoles, or tabletop displays.
COLLECTOR’S NOTE
Small porcelain pillows occupy a distinct place within Chinese scholar culture. Their compact size made them suitable as arm or elbow supports while reclining on kang platforms or daybeds, particularly in study settings where flexibility and comfort were valued.
The decoration features a foo dog and ball, a motif associated with guardianship and auspicious energy. The painting is executed in a loose, calligraphic brush style favored on scholar-associated objects, using quick but intentional strokes that emphasize movement and vitality.
The calligraphy on the underside reads “富贵 (fu gui)”, meaning “wealth and honor,” a traditional blessing commonly found on domestic wares. Dates 1870-1900.
