Dimensions: 33 ½" H x 17 ⅝" W x 16" D
A regal pair of French side chairs from the Directoire period (circa 1800). The chairs have painted frames in chalk-white now aged to fine craquelure texture softening the symbolic, Neoclassical imagery carved in the back. Within the thick handrail one sees a stylized Greco-Roman urn framed by a diamond-shaped outline. In the splat is a (pierced) anthemion motif flanked by columns. Wide, flat seats are currently upholstered in a dark green velvet over natural stuffing. Note that one chair has worn through to expose the horsehair underneath. Slender tapered front legs and sabered back legs have a sense of lightness to fit anywhere. Please view the detailed images to see the current condition. Sold as a pair.
