A leading exponent of 19th-century Lombard painting, always linked to a love of "true reality," Pompeo Mariani was also known as the "Italian Impressionist" due to the influence of French Impressionism and the cultural and other experiences that defined the Belle Époque, which the artist lived in Milan, Bordighera, Nice, and Monte Carlo.
