This bespoke Turtle and Crane find is a masterclass in 1980s high-glamour design. Confidently attributed to the legendary Maitland-Smith (and retaining its original label), this monumental pedestal stands as a tribute to the "Skyscraper" architecture of the Art Deco era, reimagined for the luxurious maximalism of the 1980s. Unlike standard display columns, this piece is wrapped in a stunning, chaotic Burl Wood veneer (likely Walnut or Mappa Burl) that offers a rich, organic counterpoint to its strict geometric silhouette.
The design is anchored by a dramatic stepped plinth base which grounds the piece with architectural authority. Ideally suited for the Grandmillennial collector or a lush Palm Beach Regency library, this pedestal is the ultimate stage. At 46 inches tall with a substantial 15-inch square base, it provides the perfect elevation for a porcelain dragon jar, a massive fern, or a classical bust, transforming the object it holds into a focal point of high art. The "tortoiseshell" depth of the wood grain catches the light beautifully, adding warmth and texture to any room while commanding attention without dominating the footprint of the space.
This piece is in excellent vintage condition consistent with age and high-end manufacture, retaining the original maker's label on the underside.
Turtle and Crane is a curated collection of vintage treasures based in Mobile, Alabama. We specialize in high-end Palm Beach Regency, Chinoiserie, and Hollywood Regency finds, passionately dedicated to "Turning the Past into Stunning Decor for Today."
