A refined example of a Japanese Isho Tansu (clothing chest) from the Meiji era. Crafted from lightweight but rot-resistant wood, this chest was designed to store precious silk kimonos. It is finished in a deep, reddish-brown Fuki-urushi lacquer that highlights the wood grain while protecting the surface. The piece is defined by its elaborate, hand-forged black iron hardware, including heavy "Warabite" handles and large, decorative lock plates featuring floral or geometric motifs. A unique feature is the small hinged door on the lower right—originally a locking safe compartment for storing family valuables, ledgers, or seals.
This Tansu is the definition of functional art. Its 35-inch height and 47-inch width make it a perfect living room console or small media stand.
