Original Blue Painted and Carved Swedish Chair, Dated 1722
Early 18th-century Swedish pine chair retaining its original painted and carved decoration, dated 1722. The chair features an original blue painted background with red and yellow accent colors, along with traditional painted tulip motifs across the front. The carved back displays a decorative monogram and the clearly inscribed date, reflecting early Scandinavian folk art traditions.
The chair is constructed with a framed seat intended to hold a cushion, though no cushion is currently present. Surface wear and paint distress are visible throughout, consistent with over 300 years of use. Separation at the seat bottom and historic repairs to the chair arms are evident and typical of furniture from this period.
Restored, strong, and stable, this chair remains functional while serving as an exceptional example of early Swedish folk craftsmanship, combining decorative artistry with practical form. All scratches, cracks, dings, and age related separation are reflective of age and do not detract from the visual appeal nor function of this delightful folk art chair.
