The piece features black tufted leather upholstery trimmed with brass tacks and a painted Greek Key motif on the apron in a blend of the Neoclassical Empire and English Regency styles. The Neoclassical Empire style (c. 1799–1830) in furniture design emerged during Napoleon Bonaparte's reign, serving as a political and artistic statement intended to link his leadership of the French state to the grandeur of Imperial Rome and ancient Egypt.
Barnard & Simonds Co. was a New York-based furniture company founded in Rochester in 1898. They relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1959, after this chair was made, and were eventually purchased by Baker Furniture in 1967. See less
