A striking Japanese avant-garde erotic woodblock print, signed and dated 1974, and issued in a limited edition of 500. Rendered in a powerful palette of black and red on natural paper, the composition distills the human figure into interlocking, sculptural forms, emphasizing rhythm, tension, and abstraction over narrative detail. Drawing from traditional shunga imagery while firmly rooted in postwar experimentation, the work reflects the 1970s Japanese avant-garde movement, when artists revisited classical themes through bold graphic reduction and modern sensibility. Signed in pencil “Y. Mori,” dated ’74, and bearing a red artist’s seal, the print is handsomely presented with a fine black linen mat and gilt wood frame, ready for display.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE:
By the early 1970s, a number of Japanese artists began reinterpreting shunga not as illustrated narrative, but as a vehicle for modern form and expression. Works from this period often blend traditional woodblock techniques with avant-garde abstraction, producing images intended for a private collector audience rather than commercial publishing. Signed, dated examples with personal seals—such as this print—reflect the independent studio practices of the era and are increasingly appreciated within collections focused on postwar Japanese graphic and erotic art.
