An exceptional and visually commanding circa 1870 Victorian silverplate inkstand, this piece exemplifies the height of 19th-century craftsmanship and the era’s fascination with Egyptian Revival design. Substantial and finely made, the inkstand rests on a gracefully rounded base supported by ornate, dimensional feet, lending both elegance and architectural presence to a writing desk or library table.
The upper surface is exquisitely hand-engraved with Winged Sun Disk motifs, a powerful ancient symbol associated with the sun god Ra and the eternal journey of the sun across the heavens. Representing divinity, royalty, power, and protection, the outstretched wings convey divine guardianship. Flanking the design are engraved vultures, traditionally identified with Nekhbet, the vulture goddess and patroness of Upper Egypt, further reinforcing the themes of protection, sovereignty, and sacred authority. Two recessed channels on either side are thoughtfully designed to hold pens, blending symbolism with practical utility.
At the center rises a striking casket-form ink compartment, dramatically elevated and anchored by four finely modeled, three-dimensional vultures. The removable lid is crowned with a highly detailed sculptural depiction of the Sphinx, a timeless emblem of mystery, guardianship, and ancient wisdom. Beneath the lid, the interior reveals two original glass-lined inkwell recesses, both intact, along with a central compartment ideal for storing stamps or small desk accessories.
The silverplate surface remains bright and beautifully preserved, with no visible wear, underscoring the quality of the metal and care it has received over time. Though unmarked, the weight, execution, and detail speak to a high-end maker and a luxury object intended for an affluent Victorian desk. Measures 11.25 inches wide, 6.75 inches deep and 5.5 inches high. Weighs 2 pounds 8 ounces. Excellent condition with light signs of age-related wear/tarnish. A truly museum-worthy Victorian inkstand, rich in symbolism and presence, perfect as a statement piece for a study, library, or curated antique collection.
