Designed in 1997 by Kevin Walz for KorQinc., this striking sculptural chair is crafted entirely from molded cork, making it both an eco-forward design statement and a highly collectible example of late-20th-century experimental furniture. The form is boldly architectural, with a fluid, continuous profile that sweeps from the slatted backrest through the arms and into the seat, contrasted by crisp vertical cutouts that create rhythm, lightness, and ventilation. The warm, speckled cork surface gives the piece a rich organic texture while remaining graphic and modern in silhouette. KorQinc., founded by designer Kevin Walz, was known in the 1990s for pushing sustainable materials into the realm of high design. This chair perfectly reflects that philosophy, blending postmodern sculptural form with environmentally conscious construction. It reads as both functional seating and a small-scale design object, equally suited to a contemporary interior, a collector’s space, or a curated modern room.
I love this piece because it feels like a true work of art, yet it has a wonderful sense of playfulness. The sculptural form, unexpected material, and rhythmic cutouts make it feel almost like a design experiment brought to life. It’s a very rare example of functional art from the 1990s—bold, imaginative, and surprisingly joyful, while still being completely usable as a chair.
The chair is marked “KorQinc. © Kevin Walz” and dated April 15, 1997, confirming its authenticity and production period. Two chairs are available. This listing is for one chair. A matching KorQinc cork side table by Kevin Walz is available in a separate listing.
