A German Jugendstil / Art Nouveau vase in the shape of a tall, cylindrical beaker on a spreading foot from Orivit AG of Cologne, dating to the first decade of the 20th century. The antique silver-plated vessel was engraved as a presentation piece and awarded as a trophy in 1911
Good condition with a few minor nicks, polishing marks, and some oxidation; the upper rim is slightly out of round and foot rim is bumped on one side but the design remains stable and sits flat on a tabletop. Measuring 9.75 in. height x 4.25 in. diameter (at rim) and stamped Orivit over 5707 (model/form number ) over M on the base.
Engraved: Ehrenpreis / gegeben v. Offizierkorps / d. 2 Bad Drag Regts. No. 21 / Bruchsal 23 Juli 1911, which translates to an honorary award presented by the Officer Corps of the 2nd Badische Dragoon Regiment No. 21 (a cavalry association of the Grand Ducal Baden Army) in Bruchsal, Germany, 1911.
Wilhelm Ferdinand Hubert Schmitz founded Orivit-Metallwarenfabrik near Cologne, Germany in 1894 and the firm quickly gained attention for their luxurious and artistic metalware designs. Orivit won a Gold Medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900 followed by two Grand Prix awards and a Gold Medal at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. The company was acquired by WMF (Wurttembergische Metalwaren Fabrik) in 1905 and remained in business until 1914.
