Spanish hand-carved, polychromed wooden statues, also called santos, which are religious folk-art figures that originated between the 11th and 15th centuries. During the era of the Crusades they were part of a long-standing tradition of religious art. These crusaders reflect the rustic, naive style of peasants who used these in their prayers and devotions honoring the brave warriors. Each wears a helmet and holds a shield with crest as they would in battle while defending the Holy Land. This trio was made in the beginning of the 20th century when the custom had a resurgence in Spanish religious expression. The carvings are historic symbols of faith and the medieval era, that can serve as unique decorative accents today. See less
