It originally was an insert in a French magazine from 1911 that featured an article on Cheret. This image is NOT a recent reproduction print. Original Cheret lithographs are hard to find with the passage of time. His works are often reproduced today. He is known as the father of the modern poster; his works transcended commercial advertising art into poster art and finally into an art form that has influenced collectors and the art world alike. His paintings of voluptuous women of the Moulin Rouge decorated the streets of Paris in the early 1900s. His work mixed brilliant hues with a fine and graceful technique making his work unique, delicate and highly recognizable. This print is called "Les Bles" (wheat). It was a design featuring a woman with fresh wheat cuttings. It was designed as a tapesty; note the garlands of flowers and ribbons in the frames surrounding his dancing characters and cupids. The lithograph is done in soft warm tones of color and personifies Cheret's craft of illustration. Pristine condition. Signed in lower right. Image size measures 7.5 x 12.75 inches; lithograph size, including the clean borders, is 10.25 x 15 inches. See less
