Historical Context: The Caldas Rivalry
This striking ewer is a fantastic example of the distinctive Portuguese Palissy Ware (Faiança das Caldas) that emerged from the town of Caldas da Rainha in the late 19th century. While the style originated with Bernard Palissy in 16th-century France, its 19th-century revival in Portugal—spearheaded by Manuel Mafra—achieved a unique, densely modeled, and naturalistic look.
José Alves Cunha was a contemporary and competitor of Mafra and Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro in Caldas da Rainha. While Mafra's work is often characterized by sheer density and the struggle between creatures, Cunha's pieces also display exceptional skill, often sharing the "mossy" or "bark-like" textured background that defined the regional style, as seen here. These ewers and plaques were exclusively ornamental, made to shock and delight Victorian collectors with their trompe-l'œil realism and dramatic depiction of the natural world.
Details and Composition
The ewer is a three-dimensional cabinet of curiosities, utilizing extreme relief and vivid glazes to create the illusion of a living, decaying piece of the forest floor:
The Ground Texture: Like Mafra’s pieces, the body is entirely covered in a coarse, granulated green glaze, expertly modeling a dense, wet texture of moss, lichen, or woodland bark. This provides a deep, shadowy backdrop for the lighter, smoother creatures.
The Serpent Handle: The handle is formed by a dramatically coiled snake, realistically glazed with a scaly, patterned finish in browns and creams. A smaller serpent is seen entwining itself around the neck of the ewer, enhancing the sense of movement and immersion.
Applied Fauna: The body is populated with meticulously modeled insects and amphibians, showcasing Cunha's skill in miniature sculpture:
A vibrant frog is positioned near the base, its glossy green glaze contrasting sharply with the matte, textured ground.
Large, striped caterpillars crawl across the body, adding a hint of decay and the cycle of life.
Smaller details, such as a butterfly and potentially salamanders (or lizards), are applied across the surface, contributing to the dizzying biological tapestry.
The cover is topped with a creature (a snail or insect) acting as a final, naturalistic flourish.
The overall effect is one of a miniature, thriving, and slightly grotesque terrarium, making it a definitive work of the high-Victorian Faiança das Caldas aesthetic.
