This antique Majolica figural dog container is attributed to Jérôme Massier Fils of Vallauris, France, a member of the renowned Massier pottery family known for naturalistic animal figures and innovative glazing techniques. Made circa 1890–1910, the piece is formed as a seated dog with a lidded top section that lifts to reveal an interior cavity, consistent with tobacco jars, cookie jars, and other covered storage forms of the period. The glaze features the Massier family’s signature green and yellow drip technique, applied over a molded earthenware body. The underside carries the appropriate maker’s mark.
Majolica wares produced by the Massier workshops during the late Victorian and early Art Nouveau eras are noted for their detailed modeling and expressive use of color. This figural dog aligns with the family’s focus on lifelike animals and decorative functional forms, which remain highly collectible today. Similar Massier animal jars are well documented in European ceramics references and continue to be sought after by collectors of French majolica and Vallauris pottery.
