About The Poster: From L'Ornement Polychrome ( Polychrome Ornament) by Auguste Racinet, printed by Imprimerie Firmin Didot Fils et Cie, Paris. This book was a reference ''to render major services to our industrial arts''. It was in fact a catalogue of ornaments from the past, classified by style, and printed with the best savoir-faire of lithography by Firmin Didot, from famous familly of printers.
It was published in two volumes; the first 100 plates were published in ten installments between 1869 and 1873.
Shortly after published as a volume in 5000 copies, a second edition was printed in 1875
Auguste Racinet (1825-1893) was a French artist, designer lithographer, director of publishing and art historian. His two major works are L'Ornement Polychrome and Le costume historique. He received the Legion of Honour in 1878.
Didot is the name of a family of French printers, punch-cutters and publishers. Through its achievements and advancements in printing, publishing and typography, the family has lent its name to typographic measurements developed by François-Ambroise Didot and the Didot typeface developed by Firmin Didot.
