A handsome early–mid 20th-century Longines marine chronometer, housed in its original mahogany single-tier chronometer box with brass fittings. This would have been used aboard ships for precision timekeeping and navigation Dial & Features The white enamel dial is clean and crisp, marked: LONGINES at 12 o’clock “Chronometer” Arabic numerals in bold black type Blued steel spade hands Subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock
The dial layout and typography are characteristic of 1930s–1950s Longines navigational instruments, produced for commercial marine service rather than naval Admiralty contracts Compagnie des Montres Longines, Francillon S.A. - or simply Longines - is a Swiss luxury watchmaker based in Saint-Imier, Switzerland.
Movement & Suspension The chronometer is mounted in a brass bowl held within its gimbal suspension, allowing the mechanism to remain level aboard a moving vessel. The gimbal arms and locking mechanism appear intact, with original brass hardware showing good aged patination Mahogany Case The box is crafted in solid mahogany with dovetailing at the corners, brass stop-hinges, and a front lock (key not visible). The interior of the lid shows remnants of the original instruction or maker’s label, now largely lost but still visible in outline — a common occurrence in working chronometers.
