The Garden of Abundance: A Famille Rose Octagonal Dish, Circa 1740
This magnificent octagonal dish is a vibrant tableau of color and symbolism, capturing the zenith of Chinese Export artistry for the Western market. Created around 1740, its design is a harmonious blend of auspicious emblems meant to convey wishes for prosperity, happiness, and purity.
At its heart lies a beautifully rendered still life: a bowl of "the three abundances"—the pomegranate (fertility), the Buddha's hand citron (happiness), and the gourd (longevity)—rests beside a scholar's scroll and a pot of blossoming flowers. This collection of treasures is presented upon a lush, ribbon-bound bouquet of sacred lotus flowers. The lavish border serves as a brilliant frame, with panels of luminous turquoise alive with butterflies and blossoms alternating with fields of rose-pink diaper work, subtly enhanced with ethereal bianco-sopra-bianco details.
A captivating piece of history, this dish was not merely a decorative object but a vessel of good wishes, beautifully designed for a connoisseur's collection.
Dimensions: 13 inches diameter x 1 1/2 inches deep (33.02 cm x 3.81 cm).
Provenance: From a Philadelphia Estate; formerly with Matthew & Elisabeth Sharpe Antiques (1983).
Note: We are pleased to offer a pair of matching plates from the same service (see last photo) which are sold separately.
