The "Pulled Taffy" (or ribbon) tables are iconic examples of Tony Duquette's (1914-1999) maximalist, "More is More" design philosophy. Known for creating theatrical environments, the designer developed these sculptural pieces to blend organic forms with Hollywood Regency opulence. They were made in his legendary West Hollywood studio in the 1960s and 1970s. This location served as his headquarters and a gathering place for Hollywood's elite, such as Greta Garbo and Mary Pickford.
The "pulled taffy" name refers to the twisted, interwoven appearance of the base, which mimics the look of stretched candy or flowing ribbons. They were designed to be "showstoppers" that could fit into both spare modernist rooms and lush, elaborate interiors.
The sculptural bases are made from molded resin that has been treated with a beautiful gold leaf finish. They come with glass tops - each resting in the inset space directly on the resin base.
This pair hails from an opulent Dallas estate with a great deal of maximalist furnishings from 1970s-1980s.
