Chatsworth House, Derbyshire – c.1720 Antique Copper Engraving After Leonard Knyff, Hand-Coloured
Subject & Medium
An original early 18th-century copper engraving of Chatsworth House, Derbyshire – the great seat of the Dukes of Devonshire – finely printed and later hand-coloured. Dating to around 1720, this is a genuine period impression, not a modern reproduction.
The view presents the long “180-foot” front of Chatsworth above its formal Baroque gardens. Below the house stretch elegant parterres, straight tree-lined avenues, water features and an intricate maze, all radiating out from the palace and proclaiming the taste, wealth and power of one of Britain’s most influential aristocratic families. In the decorative cartouche at the foot of the image, the Cavendish arms and the motto “CAVENDO TUTUS” (“safe by being cautious”) clearly identify the owners.
Composition & Technique
The composition is after Leonard Knyff (1650–1721), the Dutch-born artist who became the leading specialist in panoramic views of English country houses. Working in partnership with engravers such as Johannes Kip, Knyff helped define the classic image of the great estates that dominated late Stuart and early Georgian society.
At Chatsworth, the Cavendish family created one of the grandest houses in the kingdom, filled with paintings, sculpture and tapestries, and set within gardens inspired by the latest continental fashions. This engraving records that earlier, strictly formal layout, before Lancelot “Capability” Brown transformed much of the landscape later in the 18th century.
The plate was almost certainly issued by the Dutch publisher Pieter van der Aa in Leiden, as a book illustration in one of his substantial volumes on foreign lands. The faint central vertical fold, still visible, is a reminder that it was originally bound into a volume. The image is printed from a copper plate with crisp engraved lines and rich cross-hatching, later enhanced with hand-applied watercolour that gently picks out the architecture and garden details without overwhelming the line work.
Under magnification you can see the hallmarks of true period intaglio printing: clean burin lines in the sky, dense cross-hatching in shadowed areas, and neat rhythmic strokes describing trees, hedges and crops. The paper shows gentle, even age toning consistent with an early 18th-century sheet, and there is a clear plate mark around the image. It presents very well for its age and makes a handsome, atmospheric display piece.
Dimensions (Framed)
Height: 26.5 cm
Width: 29.5 cm
Depth: 2 cm
Framing
Presented in a late 20th-century gilt frame with a later fitted mount and glazing. The frame is not contemporary with the print but suits it well and allows the work to be hung and enjoyed immediately. As with all framed pieces, there may be minor surface marks to the frame consistent with age and handling, but overall it displays very nicely.
Why It Stands Out
An authentic c.1720 view of one of England’s greatest houses, intimately associated with the Cavendish family and the Dukes of Devonshire.
A beautifully detailed copper engraving with soft later hand-colour – decorative on the wall yet full of architectural and garden detail for closer study.
A rare visual record of a formal Baroque garden layout at Chatsworth that no longer survives, offering a superb point of reference for anyone interested in garden history and the evolution of great estates.
Accompanied by private-collection provenance, curation by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD, a later gilt frame with mount and glazing, and museum exhibition history – precisely the sort of backstory that appeals to both serious collectors and design-conscious buyers.
Whether you are building a collection of country house views or seeking a striking, genuinely old artwork to anchor an interior, this print offers both decorative impact and historical substance.
Provenance & Exhibition
From a distinguished private collection, curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD.
Exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum in the exhibition “Prospects of Power: Historic Views of Britain’s Great Estates”, Autumn 2025.
This combination of private-collection provenance and museum exhibition history adds reassurance for collectors and provides an excellent talking point when the work is on display.
Collecting Context
Engravings of grand country houses and gardens were highly prized in the 18th and 19th centuries, when connoisseurs formed large libraries of copperplate prints documenting architecture and landscape design. Great collections assembled by figures such as Sir Hans Sloane, Clayton Mordaunt Cracherode and Horace Walpole helped shape the major print rooms of today.
Many of those historic collections were later dispersed at auction or given to public institutions, so works of this type are now found in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and other major collections. Comparable engraved views of Chatsworth and other English country estates can still be seen in those museum holdings, as well as in important private libraries worldwide.

Original central vertical fold from its time bound into a volume (as issued). Small spots, handling marks and minor blemishes here and there, all commensurate with age. No heavy staining, large tears or losses that detract from the image. The sheet is sound and perfectly suitable for continued display in its current frame or for professional re-mounting if preferred. Please refer closely to the photographs; they form an important part of the condition report. less
