This is a stunning late 19th century William Dell Cincinnati Art Pottery Hungarian Faience-style ewer vase featuring a graceful, bulbous body with a slender neck, sweeping handle, and curved spout, all highlighted by soft pastel florals and ornate raised gilding. The intricate hand-painted designs in shades of blue, pink, and green are set against a warm ivory background, while the textured gold accents give the piece depth and a luxurious feel.
The Hungarian faience style, known for its vivid colors, raised gilding, and floral motifs, was popularized in the U.S. by William Dell in Cincinnati in the late 19th century. The city emerged as a major center of American art pottery at the time, home to renowned makers such as Rookwood, Wheatley, and the Cincinnati Art Pottery Company, where Dell was a manager. After the company closed in 1891, Dell continued producing pottery in this distinctive style, using the same molds and techniques. Hungarian faience was beloved for its ornate beauty and European-inspired craftsmanship, which aligned with Victorian tastes for richly decorated, collectible objects.
The vase is unmarked which is common for William Dell pieces but closely aligns with his style. Simply put, this is one of the most beautiful pieces of ceramic I have come across, from the incredible detail, the unique gilding, and the form of the ewer itself. A true piece of art and history, it will make a wonderful addition to any collection.
