History:
The plates were designed by the acclaimed Danish artist Bjørn Wiinblad (1918-2006), known for his departure from Scandinavian minimalism in favor of colorful, fantastical designs.
The collection was produced by the prestigious German porcelain company Rosenthal as part of their high-quality Studio-Line. Wiinblad had a long and significant collaboration with Philip Rosenthal, which lasted over 50 years. The main series of plates featuring scenes from the Aladdin tale were produced between 1979 and 1983. Other pieces in the "1001 Nights" line, including the "Woman with Flowers" motif (which also appeared on vases), generally date from the 1970s. The collection draws inspiration from the classic Middle Eastern folk tales compiled as One Thousand and One Nights, featuring elements like vibrant colors, gold highlights, and oriental motifs. The "Woman with Flowers" motif is characteristic of Wiinblad's artistic style:
It features a whimsical, round-faced woman with an arch of flowers, dressed in a vaguely 19th-century or fantastical costume. The design uses saturated colors, often on a striking cobalt blue background, with opulent metallic gold ornamentation. While some plates in the series depict specific scenes from the Aladdin story, the "Woman with Flowers" design is more a general representation of the dreamy, romantic, and natural elements found in Wiinblad's interpretation of the 1001 Nights theme. The woman's smiling face and the abundant floral decoration embody the joy and imagination that were hallmarks of Wiinblad's work, which aimed to bring life and personality to interiors.
