The end of the Cultural Revolution created an impetus to seek foreign cash needed for China's resurgence. The potters at Shiwan were reviving their pottery industry and as a result, modern pieces were produced. This bowl is an example of their attempts at modern design but still keeping their traditions. The potters have made three dimensional sculptures of birds and flowers on their wall pockets or wall hanging pots previously, so they apply the same techniques on the larger bowl, and it is a very pleasing result.

This is a finely crafted large ceramic bowl decorated with a graceful bird perched among pink plum blossom branches. The bowl's smooth glaze enhances the vibrant motifs, while its generous size and elegant form make it both decorative and functional - a striking example of artistic ceramic craftsmanship of the Shiwan potters.
