Hand-carved in the style of Louis XIV, this pair of walnut armchairs has immaculate carvings, highlighted by gently sloping arms that terminate in lion faces above baluster stumps. Dating to circa 1870, the wood has been bleached more recently, allowing the nuances of the master-level motifs to gain prominence.
Expanding on the lion theme, the front two feet have been styled as monopodial paw feet, complete with tufts of fur above the knuckles. They are joined by an arbalète-shaped apron with a center leaf margent. Even the H-stretchers are well-carved, with highly turned balusters connected by large rectangular joinery. The rigid, upright backs, which are a hallmark of Louis XIV chairs, have a subtle en chapeau form that is embellished by the numerous nailheads that affix the beautiful silk upholstery. Large flowering vases can be seen on the back and the cushion fabrics, which have a tan background that pairs nicely with the golden color of the walnut frames. A striking pair of Louis XIV walnut and floral armchairs, these were designed to be statement seating. The lions represent strength and nobility, while the backs have imposing height.
